The public writing part reminds me of Harlan Ellison the science fiction writer (and twice winner of Edgars for best mystery stories) who used to raise funds for science fiction bookstores by sitting in their front window for a day and writing a story, usually on an assigned topic. The manuscript was then sold at auction.

ELlison said some writers got so offended at the idea of doing it in public that they seemed to be confusing writing with the other "doing it."
