POP QUIZ 3: A WORD TO THE WISE

by Robert Lopresti

It’s the end of summer, so let’s not get too heavy.

Here are a few word games.

1. What do these words have in common?

    abuse combat convict
    desert house produce
    rebel subject wind

Hint: These words do not belong in the above group: home, distress, fear, mouse.

2. What do THESE words have in common, besides being the names of animals?

    bear cow crow
    dog dove fish
    fox hawk parrot

Hint: The following words do NOT share this characteristic with the words above: dodo, parakeet, raccoon, salmon, tiger,

3. Find the partner.

Each of the words in the left column has the same relationship with a word in the right column. Once you spot the relationship the rest is easy.

Hint: One pair is long and tall.

    dark blunt
    flat easy
    in fewer
    less found
    left heavy
    long new
    soft rise
    spring safe
    wet sweet
    won tall
    young wrong

Hmmm, I am not good at these word puzzles! I think I’ve figured out the second one, but “dove” makes me unsure. As to the other two, I have no idea . . . yet!

I believe I have solved the puzzles. Rather than spoil the fun, I’ll think up new instances: object;duck;unite/separate.

A shy friend and I came up with the following:

    1) converse; increase; indent; entrance; separate

    2) ferret; swan; skunk; buffalo; snake; fish; weasel; crab; worm; whale; buck; goose

    3) on / fresh; loose / sober; cheap / loathed; come / stop; exit / attention deficit (The last one’s for our ADD columnist and is just as off the wall. A clue in our #1 above)

Sorry if DOVE throws you. You are on the right track. All of you guys are so smart! And I LOVE “entrance” as an example. Wish I had thought of it.

You are wicked, ABA, using the same word in TWO different puzzles.

To get even, here’s mine for section 3:
join / Eden (look to words in Rob’s section 1 for a clue)

Those are fun and challenging lists, Rob.

  6. September 13th, 2010 at 12:24 pm, A Broad Abroad Says:

    Dear Mr Pot

    Me? Wicked?
You shall get your just deserts.
