IT’S WONDERFUL TO WRITE

by Robert Lopresti

Matilda_asleep_on_keyboard

I’m sitting at the keyboard
with a frown across my face
Just wishing this first draft of mine
       would tumble into place.
I sing the song of everyone
       the writing bug has bitten:
It’s wonderful to write
but it’s better to have written.

The storyline keeps stretching out.
       but never seems to bend.
The one cliché I haven’t yet
found use for is “The End.”
My plotting feels so clumsy,
like I’m typing with a mitten.
It’s wonderful to write
but it’s better to have written.

Once done I get to edit.
That’s the best part of the labor.
I’ll make sure each word is right,.
       and working with its neighbor,
Matching mood and metaphor
to make the pieces fit in.
It’s wonderful to write
but it’s better to have written.

Proof-read time will follow
just as spring comes after winter.
What a joy to grab the pages
       fresh out of the printer,
Reading words I used to love
to see if I’m still smitten.
It’s wonderful to write
but it’s better to have written.

When it’s finally published, that’s
the part I love the most
The struggles all seems worth it..
Now’s the time to bask and boast.
I’ll still repeat my mantra, but
I’ll purr it like a kitten:
It’s wonderful to write
but it’s better to have written.

First to chant that phrase, I think
was one who tried to scrawl
The story of a mammoth hunt
       on some deep cavern wall.
Writers of each rank agree
       From Bard to Bulwer-Lytton:
It’s wonderful to write
but it’s better to have written.

Sing it out, you scribblers from
       Botswana to Great Britain
It’s wonderful to write
but it’s better to have written.

For us illiterati, let me tweak Lopresti’s note:
It’s , y’know, like neat to write but it’s gooder to have wrote.

    I’m hitting at my laptop
    a scowl upon my dial
Just wishing this reply of mine
    had elegance and style.
My cry is that of someone
chewing more than she should bite off.
At least I’ve seen the light
of day and know that I’m a write-off.

    Thanks for the smile, Rob.

Absolutely brilliant, Mr. Lopresti. Thanks for the smile, and the truth of it.

Very nice, sir. I enjoyed that.

Thanks, especially to you poets at the top.

To those with an ear for meter I apologize for goofing one line, leaving it halfway between two states. It should have been either:
I’ll make sure that each word is right
    or
I’ll make sure every word is right

    Ah well.

Love it! I’m sending it to all my writing friends.

Everyone loves a poet,Rob! No question that it is better to have written, but then it all starts over again…and again…and again.

    I was slayed at “mitten”

  10. June 23rd, 2011 at 4:32 pm, Leigh Says:

    The least of Robert’s poems
    Is better than my best.
I throw hands up in despair
And chuck out all the rest.
    I load my automatic,
    Feeling very, very dissed.
    I can say with certainty
It’s much better to have missed.

Forgive, I can’t gild the lily of those above me.

I was just thinking the same thing yesterday as I slogged through some rough drafting.
