STORY TELLING
by Leigh Lundin
Growing up, I was surrounded by books from my ancestors, novels from post-Civil War through the 1950s. The art in these books lent a romantic immersion to the works, art from McGuffey Readers, Little Nemo, the Leyendecker brothers, and Maxfield Parrish.
This YouTube video caught my eye, telling a story about story telling.

The song is Caribbean Blue by Enya. Those of us who love Maxfield Parrish will recognize his imagery and that of the brilliant fecund period he worked in.
In our century, it’s nearly forgotten that childhood indulgences such as toys, games, and books are relatively new phenomena. Prior to the 1800s, the constant toil of life was hard and children were expected to be little men and women, working and earning in furtherence of the family’s existence. This turn-of-the-century period is special because it was a turning point and for us, a time of nostalgia.
Leigh,
Great video!!
You are familiar with my computer illiteracy, so what is “pinging”?
fran
Pinging is an internet command to test if a computer can reach another, presumably distant device.
The term comes from Navy sonar (which James undoubtedly understands better than the rest of us). If you remember in The Hunt for Red October, the ships and submarines sent out ‘pings’ (“Give me a ping, Vasili. One ping only, please.”) to sense the presence of unseen submarines. The ping sound wave bounces off the object, subsequently ‘heard’ by the issuer. The time delay between issuing the ping and hearing it is an indication of distance.
Likewise, when a computer ‘pings’, it sends out a signal which bounces off the target URL and returns. The delay can be a rough indicator of the distance in local networks and nodes in the broader internet world.
Leigh’s description of sonar (an acronym for “sonic navigation and ranging”) is essentially accurate.
I disabled pinging to the site to discourage spambots — programs that send spam to the comments section — after the anti-spam filter installed on Criminal Brief failed to intercept a slew of spam messages.
Leigh;
Great video and effects I need to see this on high resolution screen.
You mentioned the masters of Illustration in there time when they
lived liked Bill Gates and their works reflected their talent.
Today there are not Michelangelos as we see more and more
the extent of “Teams” vs individual artist. I guess the Hildebrant
Brothers would be the forerunners where they, many times both
painted on the same illustration. Perhaps individual “Masters”
were limiting us? Steve, Lions Breath Studios.
