Factoids?

by Leigh Lundin

Amongst the glut of eMail was another of those with purported facts. This turned out to be one of the weirder ones, and I found myself wondering who comes up with these things! Some of the claims include:

  • Alfred Hitchcock didn’t have a bellybutton.
    • Really? Exactly how did this come to public attention?
  • Only 7% of the population are lefties.
    • The remaining 93% listen to Fox News.
  • 40 people are sent to the hospital for dog bites every minute.
    • Why are people biting dogs anyway?
  • 40,000 Americans are injured by toilets each year.
    • Who is tossing these toilets around?
  • Babies are born without knee caps. They don’t appear until they are 2 to 6 years old.
    • It makes the job difficult for junior mafia enforcers.
  • The average housefly lives for one month.
    • Not in my house!
  • A coat hanger is 44 inches long when straightened.
    • Was this discovered by a government employee?
  • The reason ostriches stick their head in the sand is to search for water.
    • I thought they were ignoring the economy.
  • Most of us have eaten a spider in our sleep.
    • There must be a Lewinsky joke here, but I’m not looking for it.
  • The only animals that can see behind themselves without turning their heads are the rabbit and the parrot.
    • And mothers.
  • Michael Jackson owns the rights to the South Carolina State anthem.
    • Their anthem is Billie Jean?
  • In television commercials advertising milk, a mixture of white paint and a little thinner is used in place of the milk.
    • That explains a lot about our school lunch program.
  • Your feet are bigger in the afternoon than the rest of the day.
    • If true, it should make it harder to stick my foot in my mouth.
  • The average computer user blinks 7 times a minute.
    • Whew! I managed to get a column out of this!

This reminds me of the fact that 37.24% of statistics are made up.

    Alfred Hitchcock didn’t have a bellybutton…….

Perhaps this was his greatest mystery. 🙂
